Artist Profile
Eric Joyner The award-winning work of Eric Joyner has been exhibited in galleries and shows across the United States. A freelance illustrator for the past 23 years, Eric has been a member of the San Francisco Society of Illustrators since 1984 and the New York Society of Illustrators since 2003. He has also been an Instructor and Speaker at both the Academy of Art College and the California College of Arts & Crafts. A highly skilled illustrator and painter, Eric Joyner has also worked on the production of a number of games for Mindscape; on a 3D film project for Midland Productions in Berkeley, CA; and for Spunky Productions, Inc., as a background artist for various Flash animations. In 2000, Eric began to focus his attention on toy Japanese tin robots. They were soon among his most popular pieces and offered a multitude of creative possibilities for the artist. Armed with a small collection of tin robots and spaceships, Eric began painting them in earnest. In an attempt to bring them to life without losing their inherent charm, he showed them where he thought they belonged; in outer space. By 2002, the paintings were looking good but they still needed something; perhaps a nemesis to play off of, he thought . After a month or so of searching for a suitable nemesis, he had an epiphany while watching a movie in which an actor painted a still life of donuts. It suddenly wasn't difficult for Eric to envision epic battle scenes with robots retreating from 300 foot-tall donuts. The rest, as they say, is history. Many galleries have exhibited Eric's work, including The Wind Up Gallery, Mesa, AZ; Corey Helford Gallery, Culver city, CA; The Shooting Gallery, San Francisco, CA; Mmodern Gallery, Palm Springs, CA; Museum of American Illustration, New York, NY; Echo Gallery, Chicago, IL; and La La Land, Santa Monica, CA. Eric has also been the recipient of numerous awards: Merit Award, Institutional Category, Spectrum Eleven, 2004; Gold Medal, Unpublished Category, Spectrum Ten, 2003; Gold Medal, 'Humor' Show, Artisans, Mill Valley, CA., Feb. 2003; Honorable Mention, New York Society of Illustrators, 45th Annual Show; Merit Award, Los Angeles Society of Illustrators, 1991; Gold Medal, San Francisco Society of Illustrators, 1989; and Judges Award, San Francisco Society of Illustrators, 1989.
